Whirlygig Massacre

by Rebecca on May 19th, 2007

whirlygigMaple tree seeds are known in my area as whirlygigs. I have heard them called other things, such as helicopters and twirly’s. Much to the disappointment of children in this area, Ohio will have a big drop in the number of these floating around this year. We had a week of very warm weather in April. Around 65-70 degrees most days. Most of the trees, shrubs, and flowers came out during this week. Maple trees had small clusters of seeds forming when the frost came back. It went from 65 degrees back down to mid 30’s. The seed pods simply fell off. Since they were still very small it wasn’t the normal pile of whirlygigs most home owners dread, but since then then, the maple trees have yet to show forth the normal amount of seed clusters. I’m sure there won’t be as many whirlygigs this summer and fall as previous years. This is good news to those who clean out their gutters every summer to find thousands of these, but not so good for the trees themselves. Not to mention the hours of entertainment in watching them twirl to the ground on a windy day. Ah, well, there’s always next year!
