What Kind of Garden Are You Planning?

by linette on January 7th, 2008

Butterfly garden (c) Linette GerlachOver the next few weeks I’m going to talk about planning your garden. This is the time of year to plan out new gardens, and remake old gardens that aren’t working. Over the next couple weeks I’m going to go into detail on some of the different types of garden you can create.

Some of the gardens I’ll be covering include gardening to attract birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects. I’ll also dive into plants to include in cutting, vegetable, kitchen, shade, border, and herb gardens.

I want to know what types of gardens you’re interested in finding out more about. Sooo, I’m offering a bribe. If you tell me what types of gardens you would like more information on I will give you ten entries in the January Get This Garden Started Giveaway. Help me get this garden started, by telling me what you’d like to see here at Mother Earth’s Garden.

I want to have a herb garden so any information on that subject will be helpful, especially if you write about how to grow a garden in pots (I live in an apartment and don’t have a garden of my own). TIA!

Thanks for the input:) What a great idea. I’ll get a post together about growing herbs in containers in the next couple days.

I would like some information on herb gardens also. Another thing I want to try this year is growing vegetables for our local farmers market.
I would like to grow herbs for the market too. I plan to grow several different kinds of melon and squash. Any suggestions on how to grow them without having to plow up the whole backyard? Last year, I got all of my seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom seeds catalog. Everything he sells is heirloom and he gets seeds from all over the world. Very interesting catalog. Their website is rareseeds.com Thanks in advance for the advice.

I would like to see information about gardens around a small pond. Also, information on attracting butterflies would be great as my daughter is taking a photography course and loves to take pictures of flowers and butterflies!

Rhonda- I love herbs, so writing about them will be fun. I’ve never grown a commercial garden, but I’m sure I can put something together with some links for more info.

Bev- I can definitely put something together for gardening around ponds and attracting butterflies. I’m with your daughter, I love to take pictures of flowers and butterflies!

I’m currently searching for an Northeast facing shade loving garden for the front of our home. The bushes died and I’d love to add a purple/blue colored garden with a small seating area. My dimensions are about 10 to 12 feet by 4 or 5 feet? I can extend the width a little into the front yard. I’m new to gardening and this whole design aspect with finding plants is tough!
