We’re Giving Away Children’s Gardening Sets
I’m excited to announce we’re having another giveaway. This one’s courtesy of the new butterfly exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (SNMNH). They’re giving two lucky Mother Earth’s Garden readers a chance to win children’s gardening sets.
SNMNH is sponsoring this giveaway to commemorate the opening of its new exhibition, Butterflies and Plants: Partners in Evolution.
The Butterfly Exhibit opened in early 2008. It includes an up-close and
unique look at butterflies, and a 1,200-square foot Live Butterfly Pavillion where visitors are invited to walk among more than 300 tropical butterflies, and discover for themselves how they interact with their plant partners.
The giveaway:
2 Children’s Garden Sets
The gardening sets have everything for your little gardener! Each set contains a kneeling pad, kid’s gloves, a hand shovel and hand cultivator - all in a butterfly design. It’s a really cute kit to help your little gardeners create a butterfly habitat before the butterflies start to migrate south!
How do you win?
The Rules: Leave a comment between now and midnight September 1st, sharing your favorite butterfly story, or type of butterfly. It’s that simple. Don’t leave a generic “I want to win this” comment, or it won’t be included.
One entry per household, please.
The winners will be announced here, and notified via email, and will have a couple days to reply. If the winner does not respond, a new winner will be selected.
Good luck!

My grandson would love to have this. He is two and this year started following his mom around the garden and trying to catch “flies” which of course means “butterfly.” He also likes to water plants with a small watering can. When she told him he had to come in the house now he politely held up his hand in a “stop” position (imitating his mother) and said “Stop, I’m cleaning.”

My first thought was “YES! My 3 yr old will give me back my gloves, tools, etc. and be delighted about her own!” I am doubtful, but oh so hopeful! My favorite butterfly story recreates itself every time we are outside and we see a butterfly flitting by. Kaitlyn chases after them, jumping and giggling with such spirit. I’ve focused on getting more butterfly loving plants for the sheer joy they bring!

My older sister taught first grade for 34 years. She has always been very much involved in the learning process! She found a chrysalis on one of our dad’s tomato plants and put it in a wood/wire cage for my two sons. I put it in the bedroom and the next morning, there was a beautiful butterfly hanging on the side of the cage. Its’ wings were wet, so we took it outside and put it on a large flower. We watched while the wings dried and then watch the butterfly fly away. They never have forgotten that experience. Please enter me in your delightful giveaway drawing. Many thanks, Cindi

my favorite butterfly story…hmmm, that takes me way back!
the summer between 6th and 7th grade, i went to a local car wash with my dad, sister, and brother. my dad was washing the car, so we got out and started to explore. there was this old tree in the corner of the lot, almost the right for climbing. i went over to check it out, and low and behold, a monarch butterfly. his wings were all shriveled up. he was just hanging out there…no flowers around. so, being the kind of kid i was, i took him home. i let him hang out to see if his wings would straighten out, but they never did. he couldn’t fly. he could just climb around. so i figured, i brought him home, i better take care of him! i brought him fresh flowers, and made him sugar water to drink. he would climb on my hand, and just walk everywhere. i think his heart was broken just the same…to be born to fly, and never be able to…well it was pretty heartbreaking for him. i spent 3 mos with him. the day i found him dead in his cage, i cried and cried. i buried him under my favorite tree out back. granted this was almost 20 years ago this happened…but i still check the trees when i go to a car wash…

Every summer my kids go up to their grandparents’ house to spend a week with them. They bring home jars with each one containing an egg. I will never stopped being amazed at how it goes from that, to a little munching guy to a beautiful butterfly. It is so great being able to share these experiences with my kids.

When I was little all types of butterflies would come to my grandma’s garden. I would sit as still as I could and they would land on me. How fun this was for me. It will be a memory that I will always treasure.
My kids love butterflies also. My daughter loves to chase them around the yard.

Our youngest daughter, Anglela, loves to watch me work in the garden. This would be just perfect for her! My favorite butterfly memories would have to be the ones I’ve created with my own kids through my garden. We usually have my monarch butterflies in the spring and summer! Thanks for this fun giveaway!

We have a mini butterfly habitat in our backyourd with many plants that attract butterflies. The first year there wass none and the second hundreds came (all colors and sizes…sorry don’t know the types they were)-it looked as if it was raining butterflies. I’ll never forget the look of excitement on my son’s face as he ran around and tried catching one. I was pretty excited too!

My favorite story, well I have two- long ago for science we were suppossed to catch and save and collect butterflies for school- remember those stab them and save them on styrofoam projects..well I would not do that and got in trouble as a schoolkid and took a lower grade- I so remember that because I was so young and my dad yelled at me nonstop for not doing such a simple assignment. There were not computers for all or anything alternative to do, and I stood my ground.(Yes I was antifrog too growing up- but ending up in hs in sports medicine with college classes and we had cadavers and I did that- oh well, life is strange.
The other memorable time was when I went to a small wedding and there was a butterfly realease, it was so pretty.

When my youngest grand-daugther was 5 she decided to visit her great-grandma who lived next door. I walked out with her to watch her as she made her way slowly. All of a sudden she stopped dead and turned around to look at me. She had a beautiful monarck butterfly setting perfectly right on the end of her nose. It was so big you couldnt even see her mouth. It was adorable and she stood perfectly still so as not to scare it. I ran for my camera and got some great shots in because it stayed there for almost 10 minutes. She was delighted and talks about it still today.

This past Saturday I went to a birthday party of a little seven year old girl named Graicey. Her mother showed us a story that her daughter is writing and drawing/coloring pictures for. She had several pages of her story done. One of the pages in the story had to do with a cow who became distracted by a butterfly. She must like the word distracted because it was on most of the pages. What I think is wonderful is this little girl was born with several physical disabilities, including malformed fingers. Yet, she is always smiling and trying her best. I told her mom that the Scholastic website often has children’s writing contests and that when Graicey got finished she should submit her stories and pictures, which were great for her age. Her mom said the only thing she helped her with was spelling if Graicey asked for help. Her cow butterly page was great and she has a free floating creative mind if anyone should ask me. If I win the children’s garden set, I will give it to her and her sister. Good luck to all.

We have four generations of avid butterfly/bird watchers. Our youngest just celebrated her 3rd birthday. Monarch was our favorite (and still is top 3) but our then 2 year old found what we believe to be a Luna butterfly…the kind you see on the commercial for a sleep aid. It was absolutely awe inspiring!!! We haven’t seen any others, but we are always looking!!!!

My sister and I were talking outside at my mom’s house. This HUGE butterfly kept flying around my sister and I. My sister decided she wanted to take a picture of this beautiful butterfly. She went inside to get her digital camera. When she returned with the digital camera the butterfly kept flying away from her. My sister followed the butterfly for about 10 minutes trying to get a picture but then the butterfly flew into the neighboor’s yard. My sister waited a few minutes thinking the butterfly would come back into my mom’s yard. She grew tired of waiting and decided she would take the camera back inside. No sooner did she take the camera inside the butterfly started flying around me again…My sister was unable to get one photo of the butterfly that day!!
