Tracking Garden Spending and Savings

Garden seeds Since we are trying to save money by planting our garden this year, even more than in other years, I’m going to keep track of my garden expenses, and share them here.

So far I’ve only spent $1.25 on 5 packets of seeds at a local grocery store. It was an unplanned purchase, but I couldn’t pass them up. The packets are small, not a ton of seeds in each one, but for some fruits and vegetables I don’t need many. I purchased sweet peppers, buttercrunch lettuce, field pumpkins, salad cucumbers, and spinach. For most of these a small packet of seeds is all I’ll need.

I usually plant several varieties of greens, tomatoes, and peppers, so I only plant a few of each variety. Sometimes my seed packets last a couple years, so a small packet is perfect.

For some fruits and vegetables a little goes a long ways. You only need a few vines of squash, pumpkins, and cucumbers to provide enough for a family, and some to give away to friends and neighbors. Just ask a gardener if they ever have a shortage on zucchini squash in the summer!

I’ll be back regularly to keep you updated on how my garden spending is going, and on my estimated savings at the grocery store.

Linette, every year I say I am going to keep track of what I spend in the garden, and every year I stop about mid-February. I should put the receipts in my garden journal instead of in my wallet. In fact, you have inspired me to do just that and really keep track this year. Thanks
