Time To Bring In The Houseplants
I get several questions this time of year about caring for houseplants when you bring them back in the house after they’ve been outside all summer. I have a few simple things I do to help most plants get through the transition of the great outdoors to your living room window.
I usually bring in some of my flowering potted annuals in this time of year too. I like to extend their blooms a few more weeks by putting them in my windowsills.
Geraniums, and some other annual flowering annuals will reward you with blooms all winter long.
Here’s what I do when I bring my plants in for the winter:
- Pick a sunny location, to help your plants adapt to the indoors.
- Cut back overgrown plants.
- Re-pot plants that have grown over the summer to give their roots room to spread.
- Spray the leaves with insecticidal soap to get rid of any pests.
- Don’t panic if you see some of the leaves turning yellow. Many plants will go through a stage where they lose some of their leaves from the shock of being moved out of the bright sun.
- Don’t fertilize your plants in the late fall or winter. Most plant species will slow down growth and go into a dormant stage during the shorter winter days. Too much fertilizer can throw them into shock.
Some plants take the move from the outdoors to a sunny windowsill better than others. If you like a plant, try bringing it indoors and see how it does.
