The First Iris Blooms
My irises are starting to bloom. I have the first blooms on one of my purple irises. I think they’re a beautiful flower, one of my favorite spring blooms.
The only problem with irises is their tendency to spread. It’s not too much of a problem since I can usually find plenty of people to take a start when I divide them.
Irises are easily divided by their roots or rhizomes. Just dig them up carefully in the Spring or Fall and pull the rhizomes apart to divide them.
The word iris means rainbow, and they truly are a rainbow of color in the garden. I have white, purple, and yellow irises in my hillside perennial bed. Irises also come in reds, pinks, black, and shades of orange.
There are even bi-colored irises. I have a variety that blooms half yellow and half purple with a ruffled edge, they’re stunning.
I’ll have more iris photos for you in the upcoming weeks. I can’t resist snapping their picture.

We have dark purple irises blooming right now – and they’d be nice to look at if it weren’t raining. Drat.
It’s raining here too… all day. I snapped this picture earlier in the week. The white irises are just coming out, I can’t wait until the rain stops and I can go snap their pic:-)
My irises bloomed a week and a half early this year and now most of them have bloomed. I’ve been counting them and so far this year I have 27 different ones! I was blessed that I inherited a bed with a variety of irises. However, I had no idea there were this many until I split them last year and added a new iris area. I’ve added several more so who knows how many I’ll have next year!
I will take any irises you need to get rid of.
