Successful Gardening Tip: Volume I
Height
An important aspect of gardening is making your garden pleasing to the eye. The first thing that comes to mind is color, but often times people forget space and height. Before you plant anything, check the specifications. Seed packets almost always have the expected height noted on the back, as do most seedlings on the info tag. Smaller plants will get lost around bushes and spreading or cascading plants. General rule of green thumb, big ones in the back, smaller ones in the front. Also pay attention to how a plant will spread. Prepare for this in advance by leaving plenty of room around spreading vegetation. Doing this will be more asthetically pleasing to everyone that sees your garden. I have some examples here. If you notice the one on the right has the taller lily bulbs in front of a low spreading bush. This makes your eye stop on the lily and not continue on to the bush or the other plants that wrap around the rest of the porch. The picture on the left however is a great example of using height to strengthen the overall appearance of the garden. Your eye follows the small colorful flowers in the front to the taller spreading flowers and bushes toward the house, and then down around to the shade of the tree.
