Spring Garden Clean Up Time

by linette on March 3rd, 2008

Winter snowThis photo shows what our yard looked like last weekend.  Snow on the ground, and ice on the trees.

The weather is warmer this weekend, about 48 degrees today, and sunny. The snow is melting!  It was great to get outside and check out the garden. Of course we have a chance of more snow later this week, you gotta love that Ohio weather!

Here are a 5 things you can get started on now, to make your life simpler when the warm weather rolls in:

1. It’s a great time to cut back any leftover debri from last years perennial growth, and to turn last years annuals under. While you’re doing this check your perennials to make sure the winters freezing and thawing has not heaved any of them up out of the soil.

2. Now is a good time to finish up your pruning before the trees come out of their dormancy stage and the sap starts flowing. For most trees and shrubs it’s best to trim back branches that are crossing other branches and blocking out sunlight.

3. Get your coldframes in shape so you can give those seedlings an early start. I took a look at mine today, it needed to have some fall leaves cleaned out. I have a simple cement block frame that I lay a couple old glass doors over. It’s a bit primitive, but it does the job.  The best part is it was free.

4. Take a look at all your garden tools, make sure they’re oiled up and ready to go.

5. Don’t forget to get yourself in shape for the gardening season.  If you’ve been hibernating all winter start stretching and getting some exercise so you’re ready to go when the weather warms up.
