Shortage of space? What shortage of space?!
I have a confession to make. I don’t own my own garden! We rent, and while we do rent a house, the space around the house is limited, and mostly shade. Does this stop me from gardening? Of course not! I, being the resourceful person that I am, contract out. In exchange for the fruits of my labor, be it a portion of my vegetable harvest, or the beauty of my flower beds. I acquisition plots of land to cultivate and grow. For example, I’m waiting to hear back from our land lord about planting shade flower beds to make our apartment house beautiful. My in-laws have agreed to let me plant a vegetable garden in the back yard of a house they are repairing, and another flower bed at the house they currently live in. And I’m seriously considering asking our neighbor across the street about planting a 10 foot by 12 foot corner of land that is just sitting there. This idea of borrowing plots of land is nothing new. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe there is a guy who calls himself the “Urban Farmer” who makes a living off of gardening other people’s small yards in down town New York! And after all, isn’t this exactly what landscaping companies do? Many people who don’t have time, or claim to have a “black thumb” will pay lots of money to have a garden planted every year. Of course, I would never dream of doing it for monetary gain. I just love to watch things grow, and have a sense of pride to see the harvest of my efforts. So stand back urban America! I’ll be knocking on your door soon, requesting that sunny patch of land out your back door! No mere trifle, like the fact I don’t own any more land than the potting soil in my containers, is going to keep me from my gardening endevours!
