Saving water
Happy new year’s day everyone, but for gardeners in Melbourne today is a sad occassion. Our city’s water supplies have dropped so low that Stage Three Water Restrictions are necessary, this means, among other things, that we can only water our gardens with tap water twice a week, with the days determined by our house numbers. Since I live in an even-numbered house, this means my days are Sunday and Tuesday.
Â
Yesterday we celebrated New Years Eve by giving the vegetable block a good, deep last unrestricted water. And last night we filled our bath. I had a good soak, followed by my husband and kids. Then we bathed the dog. Then we bailed the water out on to our front flower and herb garden. This is the way it will have to be from now on.
Â
Let’s hope we don’t get to Stage Four water restrictions, which well mean we can’t water our gardens at all.
In the meantime here are some of the other things we are doing to save water for the garden.
Â
1. We keep a basin in our sink, to catch the water from rinsing hands, washing vegetables and so forth. This goes on the garden at the end of the day.
2. We use a bucket to catch the cold water from the shower while we are waiting for the hot water to “cut in”.
3. I am showering differently. I switch the water on to get wet, switch it off while I lather up, then on again to rinse off. I reckon it cuts two minutes of water use.
4. When possible, we bail bath water from the kids’ bath into the washing machine.
5. And, of course, we have no dripping taps, and we installed a rainwater “bladder” under the floorboards of the house when we renovated sometime ago. This means we flush our toilets and run the washing machine on rainwater - when it rains. But at the moment the bladder is dry.
