Public figures and vegetables
One of my favourite cookery writers, Geoff Slattery, once said that if the former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam had been a vegetable, he would have been an eggplant, but that he would have called himself an aubergine.
I know what he meant. The kingly purple, the elegant curves of the leaves, their fussy, arrogant ways…but analogies can only be carried so far. Nobody I know ever made Gough Whitlam wilt.
Nevertheless, this morning as I wondered around the garden I played with the analogy, trying to think of vegetables that matched various public figures, and my friends.
Apologies to the non-Aussies here, but our present Prime Minister, John Howard, is definitely a brassica and probably a cabbage.
What about joining in here folks? I think George Dubya must be an onion. Tall, pungent, and stays in the ground for too long.
Al Gore? Definetly a carrot. Delicate when emerging, but with deep roots and the ability to survive all seasons. Suggestions please.
Hilary Clinton? Jennifer Aniston? Come on!
