Protecting Plants from Late Frost
Once again I am extremely glad I didn’t plant anything yet. We had sunny 76 degree weather all last week. This week, literally right on Monday, it dropped to the into the 30’s and has been snowing on and off. While I can definitely be glad that my annuals will not be damaged, my bulbs, trees, and shrubs got a little too anxious with the warm weather streak, and now are in need of some form of covering. In the case of the bulbs and shrubs, put a good layer of mulch down. This should really help if you are lucky to not have any blooms yet. Shrubs and small trees you can also put a sheet over to protect the buds from cold winds and frost. Don’t be tempted to put plastic over them! Plastic bags can actually “smother” plants and do little to protect it from frost. You can also use vented green houses like the ones pictured here. These are best, but may not work for budget minded people. If you do this at the first sign of frost, or better yet be paranoid and watch the weather channel and do this before the cold front comes in, you should keep your plants from too much harm. If some of the buds have come to full bloom when the frost hits, you may loose a few of the flowers, but don’t worry, mother nature is the best gardener, and while she can be harsh some times, she usually knows what she is doing. The younger the plant, in terms of seasons, the more susceptible to frost it is, but most plants bounce right back if you take care of them!
