Preparing Your Garden For Winter

Mulching roses for winter (c)Linette GerlachHere are four great things you can do now to help your garden get through the winter.

It’s the perfect time to prepare your gardens for winter, if you’ve not done it already. Time is running out to plant fall perennials and bulbs in most areas. You may still be able to find some great deals at garden centers for late season perennials or flowering bulbs.

It’s a great time to mound dirt or mulch around the roots of roses, perennials and small shrubs. This protects them from the freezing and thawing temperatures of winter. You should mulch around most perennials, but don’t bury them with the mulch, or they may hold moisture and rot.

Move clay pots and concrete statues to a protected spot, to help keep them from collecting moisture. When clay pots freeze and thaw they crack and break apart.

Clean your garden tools, wash them in warm soapy water, then oil them with a lightweight oil to keep them from rusting over the winter.
