Preparing for a Storm: Don’t Over Do It
I live in central Ohio, so we get all kinds of weather traveling on our jet stream over head. The temperature fluctuation and sudden storms wreak havoc on my plants. When I have the luxury of knowing of a storm ahead of time, I group all my container plants together in a corner of my porch. The more fragile ones, or the ones with lighter pots I put toward the middle. This is about all I do. We’ve never had a storm fierce enough to do permanent damage to my in ground plants, but I do tie them down if needed. Staking in ground plants can help keep them from up rooting in a particularly fierce storm, but for the most part, allowing them to bend and sway will reinforce them better for the future. Try to avoid bringing your plants indoors for protection. Unless you have a green house the same temperature as outside, the sudden changes of environment can do more harm than good. Fragile blooms can be draped with sheets if you know the storm won’t last long, but I don’t recommend it. Keeping your plants under a wet sheet for too long can cause water damage and plants might break under the weight. Allowing your plants to stay exposed some what will make them stronger. Only protect those plants that are particularly fragile or at risk of being overturned.
