Planting a Pet Friendly Garden
I have two cats, with plans to have more in the future, along with a few dogs. This one pictured here is Elijah. The other is Keena. Being an animal lover, having a pet friendly garden is important to me. Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you have furry friends near your garden:
- The number one and easiest thing you can do is have plants that are not harmful to your animals. Pet Friendly House has a great list of plants that are safe for your pets.
- Use natural or home made pesticides and fertilizers. Compost makes a great natural mulch and fertilizer, and there are a plethora of home recipes for bug repellants and pesticides. My favorite being a mixture of garlic and mineral oil mixed in water.
Be sure to plant Marigolds and Fleabane Daisies in your garden. Marigolds repel mosquitoes and other insects and Fleabane Daisies do a great job at repelling fleas.- Plant a few pots of edible grass here and there around your garden for cats. This will help deter them from eating your other plants. If you really want to give them a treat, sprinkle the grass with catnip.
- Don’t forget your canine friends! Dog Grass, or Vanilla Grass, also called Sweet Vernal Grass, is especially appealing to dogs. Though it is an aggressive plant and should only be planted in containers. If you have an especially over eager dog, you might want to limit his/her intake, but most dogs will graze until they have had enough.
- If you know your animals are going to be in your garden, make sure they have shade and water. If they are there as much as you are, then make sure they are comfortable and don’t get dehydrated in the sun. Planting a few pet friendly shrubs or trees and leaving a cup of water out for them is great way to ensure they will keep you company while you work.
