Pine

by Rebecca on May 4th, 2007

pine needles2This is my favorite tree! Very majestic no matter where or how it is grown. There are over 100 species of pine, and they are generally found in the northern hemisphere, most species being in North America. There is a species of pine for almost any climate. From very cold regions to the tropics. While there are many pines grown for ornamental purposes, most are grown for commercial and property reasons. Pines are widely used in production of timber and paper. They are also grown in rows for wind breakers and most Christmas trees are pines. Pines are renown for their unique shapes and bark textures. There cones also have decorative qualities.

Zones: 3-8

Type: Evergreen

Light: Full sun

Size: 20-100ft tall, 20-40ft wide

Form: Pyramidal to irregular (depends greatly on the species)

Growth rate: Slow to fast

How to Grow

Because there are so many different species of pine, each is just as unique as the next in its needs for cultivation. Generally pines grow well in any type of soil, rich or poor. Since their roots grow deep to the sub soil, watering is usually not necessary. Most require good drainage, but some, like White Pine, can sustain moist soil. Poor performing trees are usually due to over fertilization, drought, and poor air quality more than lack of fertile conditions. Stressed trees, due to these conditions and others, are susceptible to insects and diseases. In areas that have cold winters, plant away from roads and walkways pinecone3since salt can turn the needles brown. If kept trimmed they make great hedges and borders.

Tid Bits

While most pines grow in the northern hemisphere, there is one species (the name escapes me) that grows as far south as Indonesia. Some of the slow growing pines make great bonsai if cultivated properly. And since pine cones are easily harvested from the ground and it is unnecessary to damage the tree, I highly recommend gathering a few, putting them in a decorative bowl, and using it as a center piece. By adding other seasonal item to the bowl, or potpori, you can use this anytime of the year!
