Dig A Hole To Plant Your Christmas Tree

Dig A Hole To Plant Your Christmas Tree

Instead of purchasing a cut or plastic Christmas tree this year, why not consider a balled and burlaped Christmas tree you can plant  in the ground after the holidays?

There are a few drawbacks to getting a live Christmas tree:

You can’t keep it indoors more than a few days if you live in a colder climate, or the tree will start to come out of dormancy, then go into shock when you try to put it back outdoors.
You need to dig a hole now, because the ground may be frozen when you’re ready to plant your tree after Christmas.
It’s a little …read more

Do You Feed The Birds?

Do You Feed The Birds?

I was watching the birds out the window this morning while I was enjoying my cup of coffee. There were quite a few cardinals, and even a blue jay enjoying themselves in my garden this morning.

I love seeing cardinals this time of year, they’re like a bright color patch on the landscape.
I enjoy feeding the birds through the winter months around our house. They’re fun to watch out the window during the cold winter days.
I’ve written about feeding the birds here at Mother Earth’s Garden in the past, here are some of my favorite bird feeding posts:

Make A Fresh Flower and Greens Wreath For The Holidays

Make A Fresh Flower and Greens Wreath For The Holidays

Instead of using the traditional greens for your holiday wreath, you can create a fresh cut flower and greens wreath to hang on your door, or to use as a table centerpiece.
Make your wreath using 2 wire wreath forms, cut pieces of floral foam (the kind florists use for fresh flowers, into 1-2″ strips and surround it with sphagnum moss and sandwich it in between the 2 wire wreath forms. Use floral wire to hold everything in place and to wire the two wreath forms together so they will not separate.

Find a large shallow pan, like a bar pan, or …read more

Do You Decorate Your Garden For Christmas?

Do You Decorate Your Garden For Christmas?

I’ve always thought it would be fun to decorate my perennial garden for Christmas, but I never have. I’m still thinking about it for this year. Over the weekend I was checking out some solar Christmas lights to put int the evergreen trees in the front of my house.

While I was checking out the little solar lights I also saw some Christmas themed solar light stakes, and I almost bought them for my garden path. I even had them in my hand, then put them back. I guess the main thing stopping me was storing them away the rest of …read more

Give Back For Your Bountiful Harvest

Give Back For Your Bountiful Harvest

If you had a wonderful harvest this year you can give back by donating some of that late season harvest to those less fortunate than you. I’m always thankful for the food that I get from my garden. There’s almost always more than we can eat ourselves.

This time of year there’s not much left from my garden but I do still have some potatoes, winter squash, onions, watermelon, pumpkin, turnips, cabbage, and apples floating around.
If you have some late season bounty why not donate it to a local food kitchen, or make something to take to your food kitchen and …read more

I love using pinecones to decorate this time of year. There are so many things you can do to add them to your winter holiday decor. Here are a few of my favorite ideas:

Scented pine cones are really easy to make, mix them in with the scents you’d like them to have, and seal them up for a few days. Cinnamon and cloves are my favorite scented pinecones.
