My Garden Zone
Jodi of Bloomingwriter is throwing out a challenge to garden bloggers called Where in the Gardening World Are You? Jodi’s challenge? Tell your readers about the part of the world you’re located in. I think this is an excellent challenge.
Jodi’s from Nova Scotia, Canada. I’m a good bit south of that in Ohio (but I think we’re in the same time zone). I tend to worry about making this blog as global as possible, so I don’t focus on my USDA zone 5 gardening conditions here in southwest Ohio.
Jodi has a great idea. I’m going to share some information about my gardens here in Ohio. We live on 19 acres north of Dayton. A portion of our property is wooded which I love. We grow several fruit trees, mostly apple trees, with a few peach and cherry trees thrown in. I have several borders and gardens. I grow a large vegetable garden, and I have a perennial flower and herb garden.
My favorite plants are fuss free, and low maintenance. I try to go native and natural in my flower gardens, but sometimes I just can’t resist unusual, or beautiful blooms.
I garden organically whenever possible. I just wish I could get the neighboring farmer to grow organically too. I cringe in the spring when I see his sprayers in the field.
Our soil is very sandy, and we live on a hill so I have to work hard at incorporating humus, and compost into the ground to keep the plants happy.
One of my favorite local gardening centers is Cox Arboretum in Dayton, Ohio. The park is beautiful all year round, and the center is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn more about gardening or nature.
What are the growing conditions here in Ohio? Our no frost growing season goes from the first part of May to the end of September. I usually start my tomato, and flower seedlings indoors during February. Potatoes, peas, cabbage, and cold loving plants can be set out in the garden in late March. The rest of the garden is usually planted in early May.
Our winter low temps are a few degrees below zero. Our highest temperatures in the summer usually hover in the nineties at the end of July.
If you’re looking for more information on the USDA zones in the United States check out the National Arboretum website.
I’d love to hear about everyone elses gardening locations and zones, wherever you are in the world. Where are you gardening at?

Nicely done, Linette! I think we ARE fairly similar hardiness zones, though the geography and weather is rather different. You’re landlocked, while we’re surrounded by water (almost an island.) I’ll get my own post up sometime in the next few days. Thanks for participating!

I had no idea you were near Dayton! You might have mentioned that and I missed it. Bald Man and I live in Dayton and love Cox Arboretum as well. Wergerzyn Gardens are beautiful, too, and have a great Children’s Discovery Garden where kids can romp in the water as well as learn a lot about plants.

It’s definitely a small world:) I completely forgot about Wergerzyn Gardens, it is beautiful there. I was trying to think of some other great places, I can’t believe I forgot about it.

I live in Central Tennessee. I know we’re in Zone 7, but that’s about the extent of my knowledge. I try to research the gardening information as I develop our yard. I’ve planted Asparagus and they made it through the first year! I’m excited to start sparingly harvesting next year.

Linette, it is nice to find out where in the world you are. I would feel daunted with 19 acres. Whew… I would take the challenge though if it were ever presented.
