My Favorite Charity
Kate over at Babylune is combining a charitable campaign with a group writing project. I think it’s an excellent idea this time of year. She’s asking everyone to blog about their favorite charity. My favorite charity is very specialized, but a very dear one to my heart.
Two years ago we lost our Australian Shepherd to old age. She’d been with us for 14 years. A couple months after she passed away we decided our house felt empty without a dog. I love Border Collies, and Australian Shepherds I’ve always had a soft spot for those two breeds.
I looked for puppies, but at the same time I also began checking the rescue organizations. My search led me to Buckeye Border Collie Rescue. When I contacted them they were very helpful in matching us up with Emily, the newest member of our family.
Buckeye Border Collie Rescue is not a shelter. It’s a dedicated network of people fostering the dogs in their homes. The Border Collie is a greatly misunderstood breed. Many people take home that cute little puppy without knowing much about them. It’s definitely not a breed for everyone.
Border Collies are high-energy dogs, especially for the first couple years of their life. They were bred to herd sheep, to be busy and work all day. When they’re idle they become bored. When they’re bored they can become destructive. Eating furniture for dinner, obsessing over the cat, chasing cars, or kids on bikes just to name a few of the bad habits they can develop. Many lose their homes and end up in shelters because their owners just don’t understand them.
Border Collies need to have a job to occupy their mind. Give them something to do and they will love you forever. They excel at obedience, herding, and agility, anything to keep their minds busy and burn of a little energy. They also enjoy Frisbee, hiking, swimming, jogging or any other type of exercise you can come up with.
I’ve been trying to teach Emily to garden, but her favorite thing to do is dig holes in my flowerbeds. I think she’s looking for imaginary bones, or moles. I’m sure she has a purpose for it in her mind. Maybe she sees me digging and thinks she’ll help out?
We love Emily even with her bad habits. Her good qualities completely outweigh the bad. She’s become a very important part of our family. I can’t imagine what would have become of her if Buckeye Border Collie Rescue didn’t exist, so that is why I chose them as my charity for The Generous December Group Writing Project.

My sister has had two border collies. She LOVES them — but they aren’t for everyone. Her dog is obsessed with her and actually gets depressed when she’s gone. Her dogs used to try and herd my son when he was a baby.
Once I was dog sitting her two and after mourning and crying for two days they actually ran away — I think looking for her. Too high maintenance for me; but really sweet to see how they act with my sis. I’ll have to send her her. She’ll love this post.
