Mother Earth’s Garden

Mwahahahaha!!!

by Rebecca on March 16th, 2007

Old Man WinterIt was seventy two degrees here the last two days. Winter was mocking me. Saying, “Look! I’ve gone for good! Plant your daisys, plant your corn. Get an early harvest!” It was hard to resist. My neighbor, along with countless others, planted some flowers in her flower bed. A local garden center reported record earnings. And I was left standing, staring longingly at the dirt in my flower bed. I thought, “Surely it won’t get down to freezing again, not if it is 70 degrees. I could plant some of my hardy flowers.” But then another small voice in my head reminded me that it was the middle of March, and when have I ever been able to plant in the middle of March? I live in central Ohio, not Alabama. So I turned my back on the flower bed, and ignored all the happy gardeners around me. I avoided the garden centers, and refused to give in. Last night it rained for hours. Local streets are flooded. A cold front came in, it dropped down to 30 degrees, and big fluffy snow flakes started falling this morning. If the ground had not thawed out from the warmth of the past two days, and all the rain, we probably would have three inches of snow on the ground right now. And all I can do is laugh! When other people’s flowers are small and meek from getting hit with the frost, mine shall be hardy and big. I have resisted you, old man winter! You shall not claim my crop! I stand triumphant!
