Mother Earth’s Garden’s 50 Best Trees
These trees have been selected to appear here because they are my own personal favorites, and they are among the best trees to plant in your yard or garden . They have been chosen from the thousands of specimens available either for their ease of care or beauty. I plan on covering all of these trees here on Mother Earth’s in the coming months, but for now I’ve included a few notes on some of them, and you can click the links for a little more info.
- Weeping White Pine - needs some training for best results.

Red Oak - pollution tolerant for urban areas

Japanese Umbrella Pine - slow growing

Weeping Japanese Red Pine - center trunk will need to be staked to keep it from being ground cover.

Village Green Elm - more disease and insect resistant than other elms

Little Leaf Linden - dense shade, disease resistant

Fig Tree - great indoors, pretty cool looking in the wild too

Shagbark Hickory - best from seed, little pruning needed, great in wide open area

Pecan - great in large open fields

Katsura Tree - beautiful fast growing shade tree that is great in rows or together in small groves.

Aspen - beautiful for small groves

Red Bud - beautiful spring tree

Yellow Wood - drought tolerant

Service Berry - heat, cold, and drought resistant

Dogwood - beautiful picturesque blooms in spring

White Fir - little pruning needed

Korean Fir - pollution tolerant for urban areas

Japanese Maple - dark maroon leaves, great for container gardens

Bonfire Sugar Maple - pollution tolerant, very colorful in fall

River Birch - more disease resistant than other Birch

Red Maple - classic fall colors

European Beech - slow growing, little pruning needed, great in open spaces

Gingko - pollution tolerant

Kentucky Coffee Tree - very weather resistant and pollution tolerant

Carolina Silverbell - great decorative tree, pest and disease resistant

Whitespire Birch - heat tolerant and borer resistant which is a common Birch pest.

Roseomarginata Beech - small Beech great for shaded container gardens.

Eastern White Pine - wetland tolerant, plant away from street and walk ways

Snow Rose - technically a shrub but makes a great bonsai.

Serbian Spruce - more pollution tolerant than other spruces

Dawn Redwood - uncharacteristically looses it’s needles in the fall

Dwarf Conifer - great in rocky terrain or small spaces

Colorado Spruce - very cold resistant

Thomson Spruce - very similar to Colorado spruce but with a very vivid blue color

White Poplar - beautiful bark and leaves

Lace bark pines are one of my very favorite trees. There’s a cluster of them at Dawes Arboretum, not far from the viburnum and lilac area. I love the pines’ mottled bark, so distinctive in its similarity to camouflage.

I’ve seen the grove of Lace Bark Pine at the Arboretum. I think the White Pine is my favorite by far. That and the Japanese Red Pine. lol I’m noticing a pattern here! Maybe I’ll just say that Pine is my favorite tree! ha ha.
