Mother Earth’s Garden

More growing children and weeds

by Margaret on February 7th, 2007

There doesn’t seem to be much to do in the garden except harvest. This is a silly statement because there is lots to do. Anyone who saw my garden now would wonder at the mess. The tomato plants are flopping all over the pathway because I haven’t tied them to their stakes for quite a while, and have not watered much because of the drought and the water restrictions. There are weeds right through the onion patch and the strawberry patch, and beans climbing the sweetcorn stalks.

The thing is, none of these things absolutely have to be attended to today. The tomatoes continue to fruit whether horizontal or vertical and weeds are like bills. You get rid of one lot, and another lot come around the corner and ambush you. Unlike bills, you can afford to ignore weeds for a bit. So I do. I might even wait for winter when I can pull them out and know they won’t get out of control again for a while.

In the last few weeks I have been feeling a little unhappy about the endless juggling act between work and the things that matter. Leaving aside the garden, I have not spent as much quiet time with the children as I would like. We always seem to be rushing to get things done.

The garden, if ignored, will continue to grow and I suppose my children will too, but the garden will still be here in fifteen years time and my children may not. People don’t necessarily grow roots anymore.

It is harder to relax with one’s children than with one’s garden.

If Clare were a tomato plant, she would be pruned and staked by now. If she were an onion patch, I would be weeding her. As it is she is just herself - lovely, rambling and full of growth.
