Make Your Own Cutworm Collars

by linette on May 26th, 2008

cutworm collars on tomato plant I make my own cutworm collars out of toilet paper rolls. They work very well, and when they’re done they’re easy to remove. If your plants are large enough, and if they’ve been hardened off before you plant them, you shouldn’t have a problem with cutworms.

If you have small plants, and they’re tender from being in a greenhouse, or indoors under grow lights, the cutworms will consider them a feast.

To protect your plants, just cut empty toilet paper rolls (paper towel rolls work too) in half or in thirds. Adjust the size to fit your plants stem. Cut a slit in one side, and wrap it around the stem of the plant after you put it in the ground.

What exactly do cutworms do and what plants do they attack?

They wrap themselves around young plants at the base and chew them off. Usually very tender plants as soon as you put (transplant) them out in the garden. Plants like tomatoes, and peppers. If the plants are a little tougher when you put them out they’re not usually a problem.

Thanks Linette. That’s interesting. I’ll have to ask my dad about this. He grows tomatoes and peppers from the greenhouse.
