I SOOOOOO need this book! We are putting in our first garden and I bought thirty 40lb bags of composted manure because my ‘compost pile’ which I started in the fall still looks like a pile of rubbish and not compost. Help! I’m not a composter but my new garden wants me to be!

You can see my first attempt at store bought composting here:

    http://kudzugrows.blogspot.com/2008/04/for-love-of-composted-manure.html

And, if you have any tips for a gardening novice, please share!

I like worm composting for one simple reason–no turning! The worms do all the turning for you.

Composting is one the greatest things! Back in Alaska, we found it difficult to do the ‘regular’ layering and turning method– it took years to decompose, but when it did, it made all the difference in the world for our plants. Now, living up in the rockies, I want to give it a nother try- this time with a barrel and a little more attention to the details. This book looks great!

My husband just bought me a composter and made 3 4×8 planter boxes. I went out and bought a whole variety of organic seeds, so I’m soo excited to get out in my garden in plant. I want to learn more about composting so this book is PERFECT!!!

I have always been interested in composting…but since we have moved to an area with bears it has become difficult and even dangerous to do so. I am hopeful that there is still a safe way to compost without attracting all the wildlife to our home. Perhaps this book could help.

I compost in trash cans with well-fitting lids. It takes a while longer to get a finished product that way (especially since I often forget to tumble the contents), but we have way too many snakes around here for me to feel comfortable doing a traditional bin.

We have composting going on BIG TIME in our back yard. My favorite helpful composting hint is water, we live in a desert and ya gotta water th’ thing every time you turn it. My favorite composting method never ever fails, I ask my Very Dear Hubby to turn the compost, and he does it!! Every time, what a guy!

My current method is drop all the scraps into the composter and leave it. We’ve never actually used any of it because we only had one composter and we were always dumping new stuff in. Now we bought a second one and we’re going to let the 1st one sit and compost first. I think I could use a book to help it out.

We moved out to the country about a year ago and now I am a SAHM. I’ve been reading about compost on several different things in the past few weeks and I think I am ready to begin. I wasn’t quite sure I wanted to do it but when Wonder Time Magazine had an article about worms this month and then 2 days later my son brought home worms from his Garden Club meeting, I saw it as a sign. So if I had this book, it would be a big help to get us started.

We have been composting for several years now. We have a black compost bin with a removable lid on top. We compost all our food scraps except for meats and bones because those things attract unwanted animals to your compost. The thing we could be better at is to always add a layer of leaves each week so the fruit flies don’t multiply so much.

We just started using a tumbler composter but we’re having so much trouble figuring out the green to brown balance, how much water it needs, whether it needs worms (does the heat generated inside kill the wormies?)

Oh yes- I have been researching up and down about starting our own compost pile this fall. We’re working out a deal to get all of our in-laws’ dead leaves since we won’t have nearly enough. This is perfect!

I don’t compost yet but would like to learn about it. Recently, I have been working on “greening” our family, including recycling, reducing our environmental footprint, gardening, etc. Composting would add another layer to our effort.

Thank you for doing this giveaway.

OK. I do compost but not very well. Hard for me not to pull the whole plants out of the garden and throw them in whole, which then takes forever to compost. So, I need guidance on doing it better!

I would love to start composting. We don’t have a garbage disposal and for a while i wanted one until i saw a show about how that stuff just goes into the water treatment plant. YUCK! So now I want to composte and bulid up my soil for all the nice veggies i plan to plant!

When we move into a house with a back yard, I want to compost for two main reasons: 1) to keep that compostable material out of the trash/landfill and 2) to create nutrient-rich soil for our garden.

I don’t compost yet, but I am so tired of throwing away things that could actually be useful. Also, this past weekend, we tore down a giant shed in our backyard which will be the future home of my new garden, so composting would be a great thing to help it out.
    Thanks!
    Here’s hoping…

I’m just starting composting and although I’m excited to have something to help out my also newly started garden, I’m a little frustrated that my husband seems to know more about this than I do! (seems my MIL did this when he was younger…)
But hey, this isn’t a competition! Although I am a little irritated that things I keep thinking “oh, I can add this to my compost” he says, “Oh, you don’t put that in there!” I keep getting mixed messages from websites and other people who’ve done this. Oh well, we’ll get it going sooner or later, and hopefully we won’t be several years into my garden before it happens!

I just decided to start composting but didn’t know where to start. How perfect is this?

I decided because we have a really aggressive recycling program in our city (yeah!) and after I recycle everything that can be, all of what I have left is able to be composted. I love the thought that my home produces no “trash”.

    Thanks!!

I don’t currently compost because I live in a condo and don’t have any place to compost. However, it is on the list of things to do once I get a house. Growing up we composted, but I don’t remember anything specific about it. I just had to dump stuff in the bin or ball or whatever container we had at the time.

We want to compost once we have our own yard, but it seems so intimidating—make sure you have the right balance of brown material to green material, make sure you turn it at regular intervals, make sure it rots at the right temperature, yikes! This book looks very helpful; thanks for the giveaway.

Our house came with a compost in the backyard. I’ve been throwing kitchen scraps into it, but I’m not really sure what I’m doing or how to use it. I’d love to have some instructions or tips.
