Mother Earth’s Garden

Inexpensive Garden Tool

This is probably the most important, and least expensive, little tool for my garden. I used to have a bad habit of over watering my plants. Probably one of the most common ways people kill or damage their plants is either over or under watering. This little gismo costs only a couple of dollars, last for quite a long time, and can definitely save a lot of headache. Especially in containers, the soil on top might be very dry, but the subsoil might still be very wet. Smaller pots, you can simply poke your finger into the soil and see how it feels underneath the surface. But for large, or deep pots, that’s not so easy. Also, some plants need to be more dry than others to do well. For example, Aloe and other succulents are very comfortable in dry soil, but some tropical plants need to stay consistently moist. A water meter is a very inexpensive way to keep tract of when to water and how much.

Hey, I like the looks of this tool. Except you’d still need to know off hand how much water a plant needs right? What I need is one that tells me both how much too water and knows the difference between plants — I always forget.

Actually, mine came with a list of about fifty common house plants and how much water they need! When in doubt, let your plants dry out a bit, either in the red or almost in the red, before you water it. Don’t go too wet. Stay in the green when you do water!
