Mother Earth’s Garden

In Search of Peas

by Rebecca on April 11th, 2007

purple hullsI think Ohio has something against lady peas, or as they are called in the south, purple hulls. I have searched high and low for this bean, but I can find no local stores that carry the seeds. I grew up with this particular vegetable and fondly remember that they went really well with ketchup. I’m sure it was just a ploy by my mom to get me to eat my vegetables but I distinctly remember she put ketchup on her beans too. I lived in the southern states then, so perhaps the northern states are unaccustomed to this particular cousin to the black eyed pea. They are very easy to grow, just weed and water them for the first two months, and by then they are so over grown that weeds have a hard time growing any way, so you just let them go until time to harvest. You know they are ready to pick when their hulls turn a dark purple, hense, the name “purple hulls.” They turn your fingers purple when shelling them too.

I suppose I will just have to order online. I hope they get here in time to plant! In the mean time, here’s my list of plants for my vegetable garden this year:

Corn

Lima beans

Carrots

Purple hulls (assuming I can find them)

Tomatoes

Pumpkins (possibly)

Zuccinni

I’m at a complete loss on how to grow green beans. It’s my favorite vegetable to eat, but it seems every time I grow it it turns out horribly wrong! So I’ll stick with what I know this year!
