Hedge Apples To Repel Spiders

by linette on November 9th, 2007

Hedge apples

Have you ever heard of hedge apples? They’re a grapefruit sized bumpy looking fruit that grow on the Osage-orange (Maclura pomifera) tree. They have their own website- hedgeapple.com. The site shows how to use them for decorating, and drying.

While they’re not edible, they’re also not poisonous.

Have you tried putting hedge apples around the outside of your house to help keep spiders away? I use them every year, and I think they truly do help. I’m all for natural bug repellants. Since we have three hedge apple trees on our property I gather a bag of them every fall and drop them around the foundation of our house.

Our house was built in the late 1800’s, so it has many small cracks and places to let the creepy crawlies in. Before I put the hedge apples around the foundation we get a ton of big black hairy spiders. Don’t get me wrong, I love spiders, but not in my house. I hate going into the bathroom, flipping on the lights and seeing a spider run across my foot. Eeek!

After we put out the hedge apples every year we get very few spiders in the house. Maybe it’s just a coincidence? I read they repel insects somewhere several years ago, and I’ve gathered up the hedge apples every year since.

I have heard that Neem Oil is a good repellent for all kind of insects, mosquitos as well as spiders.
Eating Neem fruit ie seeds keeps your blood clean,no pimples.
Keep Neem leaves under your carpet or matress keeps the bugs away.
Always have a neem tree in your garden to keep any pest away.
For allergy boil some neem leaves and cool it,to use as a final rinse when taking a bath.
Best is to go and browse Neem websites.
