Grow Some Fungus

by linette on January 28th, 2008

MushroomsMaybe I should call them mushrooms. Growing your own mushrooms is a great project for the winter gardener. Mushrooms grow very well in indoors in the cooler winter months.

Most of the kits you available have everything you need to have your own little mushroom patch up and running within a few days. Most contain manure-based compost (many are organic), a large bag or container to grow the mushrooms in, and the mushroom spores.

Many kits will have you harvesting several pounds of mushrooms, spread over a two to three month period. Imagine picking your home grown fresh mushrooms for salads, or homemade pizza. Some mushroom varieties can also be dried, frozen, or pickled for future use.

My dad grew mushrooms almost every winter when I was growing up. It was so fun to watch the mushrooms grow. We usually started a batch right after Thanksgiving, and it helped fill the void between gardening seasons. The last batch was usually picked in February, just before it was time to start tomato, and pepper seedlings for the new gardening season.

Mushrooms are very easy to grow at home, just follow the directions that come with your kit. Most types of mushrooms prefer to be kept cool and moist.

Here are a couple of the mushroom varieties available as kits:
