Geraniums as Houseplants

by linette on November 24th, 2007

Geranium (c) Linette Gerlach
I love geraniums they’re one of my favorite flowers in the garden, but they’re also one of my favorite houseplants.

I have a pink geranium in my living room window that blooms all year round, even in the winter months.

I also love scented geraniums. I have a citrus scented geranium in my kitchen. Every time I walk by and brush up against it I get the scent of citrus.  Sometimes I grab a few leaves just to smell the wonderful scent.

My favorite scented geranium is a chocolate scented geranium, it has a chocolaty-citrus scent, yum.

I put most of my geranium plants outside for the summer, then bring them when the temperatures get to cold outside. Before I bring them in I give them a spray of insecticidal soap, to get rid of any extra guest living on the plant.

When I bring the geraniums inside I try to find the sunniest windows to keep them in. It takes a few weeks for them to adjust to their new environment. The plants may lose a few leaves, but should adjust within a few weeks.

I water my geraniums about once a week, by soaking the soil. I never let them sit with water in their tray. I’m usually rewarded by their sunny blooms all winter long.
