Gardening Increases With The Rise In Produce Prices

by linette on June 9th, 2008

canning cucumbers The gas pump isn’t the only place prices are higher these days. If you’ve been to the grocery store lately, you’ve noticed the price of produce has also gone up. Many people who have not gardened in the past are taking up the hobby to help reduce their grocery bill.

Seed companies and nurseries have reported record sales this spring, according to this article in The Register Guard.

I know my vegetable garden is a little larger this year. I made sure I planted a couple extra rows of corn, and green beans to freeze. I also planted some extra tomato, and pepper plants. I normally freeze or can tomato juice, and salsa, this year I plan to make a little more.

I planted enough cabbage to make a batch of sauerkraut, and a whole row of beets so I can make some pickled beets (just for my husband). Mmmm, and I love homemade pickles, so I have several cucumber plants growing nicely in my garden.

Are you growing some extras in your garden this summer to help cut back on your grocery bill?

I read a similar article in the Wall Street Journal. I’m not growing extra veggies, just the usual ones. My veggie garden is surrounded by a picket fence. Adding to it would be a lot of work (I’d have to take trees down too). Without a fence it would all get eaten to the ground. It is much easier to stick with what I already have. But it is big enough for me.
