Gardening: Getting Close to the Maker

I was asked not so long ago, what drives me to create, and why I like to garden. I debated about posting an answer to this question for some time. As a blogger, I can pretty much say anything I want about a particular topic, with out constraint. But then comes the obstacle of writing something that is understandable and acceptable to a broad spectrum without offending or segregating people. But I can not write that way, any more than I can live that way. Who we are as people is reflected in what we do. Our jobs, our relationships, and our writing. Anything else is impersonal and lacking in depth. So I will answer this question honestly and wholeheartedly with out apology.
Why I garden is pretty simple. I’ve always enjoyed planting and watching things grow for as far back as I can remember. It was not uncommon to find me under a tree or digging in the soil, or picking flowers when I was very little. I didn’t grow up in a home where green thumbs were common. I didn’t have a mentor or close friend that particularly enjoyed gardening. What really drives me to plant and grow, what first sparked my interest, is an inherent desire to be more like the one who created me. I think this is why we as humans are driven to create anything, no matter what we “choose” to believe. I don’t view gardening as some big religious right of passage. But when asked why I garden, and what I enjoy most about it, my answer would be that I enjoy working hard at something, caring for it, and watching it turn into something beautiful. This joy is a reflection of the nature of the God who created me, and lives in me.

Great post Becca. Different things motivate different people too. I am in the same boat as you though. Why I create is simple as looking at the creator. I wonder about some of your other readers of MEG as to why they are motivated to garden too?

Hi, Becca - This post is lovely! I’m glad you gave us this glimpse into your heart. I feel the same way. For me it extends into photography in that, to me, it’s an act of worship to really *notice* God’s creation in the intimate photographs allow. As a photographer, I constantly see things - wonderful, marvelous things - and rejoice.

I completely agree Kimberley. We used to have a bumper sticker on our car that said “God doesn’t believe in atheists” then had a reference to a verse in Romans saying that it’s impossible to look around you and see all the beauty in the world and not believe in God. William and I love driving around and taking pictures. It’s so nice living in the country now too!

of course, that’s why we think someone stole almost all of our lugnuts off one of the wheels too…
