Gardening Around Ponds Part 1

by linette on January 23rd, 2008

Bog PlantsWhen you’re deciding what you want to plant around a pond there are several things to consider.

  1. What are the chances of flooding, or the pond coming over its banks on a regular basis?
  2. How wet will the soil be around the edges of your pond? Some ponds have a very gradual drop off, with damp edges, others drop off sharply, and are dry at the edges.
  3. What about splash from fountains, or aerators in the pond?

These are just some of the things you need to think about when deciding what to plant around the edges of your pond.

If your pond is damp around the edges, drops of gradually, floods often, or has splash from a fountain you may want to plant bog plants.

Bog plants work very well where the soil is moist, or even wet.

Water Iris’s are one of the most popular bog plants, because they have a beautiful bloom and they’re relatively easy to grow and maintain. They like moist soil, or even standing in a little water. They grow very well if their “feet” are kept moist.

Rushes and reeds are also great choices for pond edges.

Before you landscape around your pond, you may want to check out the plants you’re considering. Be sure they are not harmful or toxic to the fish and other creatures in your pond.

Great information! This is one post I’ve been looking for since we have a small pond in my front yard. Ours is not very wet around the outside edge so it sounds like irises are out :(
