Forcing Bulbs In Winter
What’s a gardener to do in December when the snow’s flying? I like to create a little indoor gardening experience by forcing some of my favorite bulbs.
My favorite bulbs to force are Amaryllis White Christmas, and Paperwhites
. Pot them up in a flower pot with good drainage. You can also add some ivy to the pot to add a little extra interest to the pot while your flowers are growing.
Soak the bulbs thoroughly, but don’t let them stand in water. When the top layer of soil is dry to the touch, it’s time to water again.
You can also place a shallow tray with stones in it under the bulbs. Fill the tray with water, to the top of the stones. Set the pot on top of the rocks so it is not touching the water. The moisture from the tray will ad humidity to the dry winter air which will benefit your spring loving flowers.

That is a gorgeous Amaryllis. I planted red ones this year that are about to open up just in time for Christmas. In addition to bulbs, I also cut branches throughout the winter, including forsythia which you can see here:
