Fall In The Garden

by linette on August 26th, 2008

planting a tree Here are some 5 things you can do in the fall to get your garden and yard ready for next spring.

  1. Divide and replant perennials. Fall is a wonderful time to divide perennials that have outgrown their space. Get your spade out, dig them up and find a new home for the extras.
  2. Plant a tree. Fall is a wonderful time to plant fruit trees. Now through mid October you can plant a tree and let it get settled into it’s new home before the snow flies.
  3. Fertilize all your perennials and trees, and add compost to the soil in your perennial garden, vegetable garden, and the soil around trees.
  4. If you want to seed some new grass September through November are great months to do it.
  5. Add lime to your yard if your soil has poor ph levels.

Anything you can do now to prepare your garden for next springs busy garden season will help. Most of the items listed above are better done in the fall when most gardeners have more time.

I did not realize that the fall was the best time to divide perrenials and replant, i truly thought it was the spring..I have always had this fear of losing the plants to winter kill without a few months of growth first..my gardens are a mess right now and need a total redue and design..i will be doing more than the usual fall cleanup this year
