Fall Color In The Garden

by linette on September 28th, 2008

mums and pumpkin display If your garden doesn’t have enough fall color, here are a few things you can do to spice it up.

  • Add some ornamental grasses. There are several varieties of ornamental grasses with stripes, variegation, color, or interesting shapes.
  • Add some colorful shrubs. Some of my favorites include Burning Bush, Spireas, or Viburnum. There are several others, so check with your local plant nursery for varieties that work the best in your plant zone.
  • Mums are a fall favorite, since they’re a hardy perennial they’ll come back year after year to add fall color to your garden once you plant them.
  • Another one of my favorite fall plants is Autumn Joy Sedum. They add a beautiful red color to your garden long after most other plants are done blooming for the year. The dried foliage and flowers add interest through the winter if you don’t cut them back in the fall.
  • Ornamental cabbage and kale can also add beautiful color, and interesting shapes, and textures to your fall garden.
  • Don’t forget about the trees. Most trees are changing colors this time of the year, and look spectacular. Maples, and oaks are some of the most colorful.

It’s a great time of the year to think about adding year round color to your garden. Many garden centers are having great sales this time of the year. You can pick up plants and trees for low cost that will add interest to your garden for years to come.
