Earthworms

by linette on June 17th, 2008

Earthworm We love earthworms here at Mother Earth’s Garden. Earthworms are the best indicators of soil quality you can get. They will thrive in rich, organic soil. They’ll be hard to find in soil that’s been over used, and loaded with chemicals.

Earthworms do well in the same type of soil plants and beneficial insects thrive in. They enjoy their soil a little moist, not too dry, and not too wet. They don’t do well in soil loaded with harsh chemical fertilizers, and insecticides.

One of the best ways to check the quality of your soil is to dig up a big shovel full to see how many earthworms are in there. Chances are if you don’t see any wiggling earthworms your soil needs some work. One of the best things you can do to lure them back is add compost, and organic matter to your soil.

You want earthworms to love your garden. They provide great service to your plants by aerating the soil, and helping in the process of converting organic matter to rich soil. Earthworms are a gardeners best friend, they’re also good for catching a fish on the weekends:)
