Mother Earth’s Garden

Drought conditions

by Margaret on February 13th, 2007

Our poor street trees! We live in a leafy suburb, as the real estate agents put it, but at the moment that is a sad thing. The deciduous trees are dropping their leaves although it is midsummer, because of water stress and even the native eucalypts are showing signs of stress. Several trees in the park where I walk the dog are dead, and others are dying.

This morning walking to school there were men working with secateurs to trim dangerous branches from those trees that are trying to stay alive by shedding.

Is this climate change, or natural variability? The politicians are debating this all the time in Australia at present. All I know is this drought is getting quite scary.

Meanwhile at the community gardens everything is looking parched. We are restricted to watering two days a week, either early in the morning or in the evening. The elderly people find it difficult because it’s quite dark at that time and they are scared of tripping over. I find it quite difficult because of course early morning and evening are the busiest times for a mother.

The result is that the veggie garden plot is only just hanging on. I haven’t planted anything new there for months now, because I can’t be sure I would be able to keep it alive in the heat.
