Decorating With Gourds
Gourds make a great fall display, but you can also use them after the fall season to help decorate your house for the holidays.
The small gourds make great Christmas decorations after they’ve dried out. After the fall season place your gourds in an out of the way warm dry place. Check on them often, some may mold or rot, but most will dry nicely in a month or two.
Once the gourds have dried you can paint them festive Christmas colors, or paint them with gold or silver paint markers to add extra bling. Paint your gourds then add a clear coat of polyurethane to help keep out moisture. Drill a hole in the top of the smaller gourds and hang them on the Christmas tree. You can also cut out a round hole in the front of the gourds to make mini birdhouses to hang on your Christmas tree.
Larger gourds can be carved or painted to make decorative centerpieces, or bowls to hold fruit or nuts during the holiday season. Birdhouse shaped gourds make wonderful Santa’s when they’re all painted up.
