Daffodils - One Of Springs Natural Beauties
It’s spring flower time! Actually I guess it’s April shower time, and some of you know that better than others with the recent flooding. The showers should bring us some blooming spring flowers in the upcoming weeks.
One of my favorite spring flowers is daffodils. They are so easy to grow, and a great spring blooming flower for naturalizing in meadows, and ditches.
Daffodils love the sun, but I have some in the front of my house where they’re shaded for part of the day. Even with the partial shade I have brilliant blooms every spring.
Daffodils like lots of water when they’re sprouting and blooming, but they don’t like to sit in the water. It goes with their spring flowering personality. Place them in an area where the soil drains well, and water does not stand after rain.
The best time to plant or transplant daffodil bulbs is in the fall. You will also have success if you plant or divide your daffodils in the early spring. The bulbs should be divided every 3 or 4 years to keep achieve maximum blooms.
Daffodils can be dug after they’ve bloomed and the foliage is starting to die back, from midsummer to fall. If you dig them in the summer they can be stored in a cool dry place (with good air circulation) for a few weeks before you replant them.
Whatever you do make sure you enjoy their cheery spring blooms while they last!
