by Rebecca on September 8th, 2007

Cherry Tree

spring weeping cherry tree

Probably one of my favorite flowering trees next to Red Bud. While it has a beautiful display of blossoms midspring, most species also have attractive leaves in the fall, with yellow to red colors. The bark of most cherry’s is very rich and dark, with a smooth glossy texture. Others have thin peeling bark. Definitely an attractive tree in any season. While many landscapes have the cherry tree planted in small groves or in rows for an abundance of color, you can also plant it alone as a center piece for a bed of flowers.

How to Growcherry blossoms

Plant Cherry trees in a well draining neutral soil that does not dry out completely, but does not get water logged. They can usually stand a little root competition from surrounding plants, but make sure they are open to plenty of sun. If pruning is needed, prune immediately after blooms have stopped and fertilize lightly.

Tid Bits

Cherry trees are some what susceptible to stress. Excessive stress can cause insect and disease problems, and can make the tree short lived. Where as healthy cherry trees have been known to live and bloom for generations. Prune only when necessary, and avoid un-needed disturbance of the roots, such as tilling or construction projects. Plant away from the roads and sidewalks to avoid salt, dirt, and pollution.
