Cheap way to do trellis
If you go to a gardening shop you will pay top dollar for trellis, but there is a cheaper and easier way. Buy weld mesh, of the type used for reinforcing in concrete. A 10×4 metre length will cost you about $30. Then hammer some star pickets into the ground or sturdy stakes, and use fencing wire to attach the mesh to the pickets. Result - instant trellis. It doesn’t look as good as the treated pine stuff from the gardening shop, but that will only matter until the plants grow to cover it.

My goodness, Margaret. What a coincidence. Here I was bemoaning the fact that my site, supposedly about public things, seems to always end up in the garden: a topic I’m interested in but others seem less so. And I wondered if anyone’s doing a gardening blog. And I did a search, and here you are! Just when I’ve been thinking about you!
I’ve been thinking about you for a number of reasons, as you’re aware. But also because I only found out about your Mother Earth magazine spot only after I read and admired The Meeting of The Waters (and subsequently most of your other books), and by the time I got round to reading it they canned it, the bastards. I only ever read a couple, cos I hate those lifestyley magazine things, and never realised they contained this.
So here it is! Thank you!
You’ve been doing this for… how long? I scanned articles back to early January. Thanks for your carrot tips- mine have always been unsatisfactory (never knew, either, that you had to remove the tops!) And I”VE ALWAYS WONDERED TOO about pumpkin and tomato seed surviving compost! And I’VE ALWAYS WONDERED TOO why worm farms are black!

Well well Kath, what a coincidence indeed! I have been doing this with B5Media since late last year, partly to find out more about Internet publication, partly because I really, really miss the old Mother Earth column. And I have just had dinner in Sydney with Naomi Parry. Connections, connections! See you soon. I bet you are the only person in Australia who will read this and know about my other work too!
