A Few Monday Gardening Links

A Few Monday Gardening Links

Here are a couple gardening links I thought you might find interesting.
You Girl Girl tells you how you can make your own seed starting mix. The best part? It’s all organic, and contains no chemicals.
Garden Rant has chocolate plants (Yum!). Plants that have a chocolate scent, rich chocolate color, or are just dark in color. One of my favorite plants in my garden is a chocolate mint. I love going out and plucking off leaves just to smell them. I feel a chocolate themed garden coming on!
This Garden Is Illegal talks about Orchids as houseplants. This post …read more

Growing Organically For Market

Growing Organically For Market

I found a three great resources for anyone thinking about going commercial with their garden this summer.
1. Market Organic Gardening ~ Going Commercial discusses the basics of organic gardening for market, and what you should expect.
2. Market Gardening: A Startup Guide is an excellent resource for anyone thinking about gardening commercially. The article talks about developing a business plan, finding markets for your products, record keeping, and equipment you may need for your gardening business.
3. Mother Earth’s News (one of my favorite magazines, and online gardening resources) has an article on The Heirloom Market and how to cash in. …read more

Seed Catalogs: More Than Just A Garden Wishbook

Seed Catalogs: More Than Just A Garden Wishbook

Those seed catalogs you’ve been receiving in the mail are a great source for more than seeds and plants. They contain important planting, and growing information. There are often uses for the plants listed, for example which types of corn are good for parching, which types for drying.
Many also have a plant history, at least for the basic plant types. It’s interesting to know where plants came from, and how they’ve changed through the years.
When you’re glancing through the catalog stop dreaming about your summer garden long enough to notice if the catalog has any recipes, or garden layouts you …read more

Plan A Garden Swap Party

Plan A Garden Swap Party

This spring get together with friends and have a garden (or plant) swap. Have everyone bring at least two things they have an over-abundance of to swap for things they may need in their own garden.
Some people may be better at saving seeds, others may have too many of some types of perennials, or they may have planted too many tomato seedlings. When you get together and swap everyone wins.
Besides swapping seeds and plants you can also swap garden recipes and stories. Make a garden swapping party out of it and have everyone bring their favorite garden dish or …read more

Some of the skills listed include, propagating wood cuttings, pruning, dividing, staking, mulching, controlling garden pests, improving your soil, container gardening, and many more. I can see I’ll be busy for a while checking out all the great links he has in that one post.

My 2008 Gardening Goals

My 2008 Gardening Goals

What are my gardening goals for 2008, and what are my goals here at Mother Earth’s Garden?
My gardening goals for 2008:

1. I have several houseplants that need re-potted. I plan to re-pot them in the upcoming months, so they’ll be ready for spring growth spurts.
2. I would like to add a new water feature to my garden this summer. I would like to “redo” an old concrete trough into a fishpond. If I accomplish this, I’ll show you the renovation process. If I chicken out on that major project, I want to add a small pond to my main perennial …read more
