Flower Pot People

Flower Pot People

I’m a big fan of flower pot people, they rank right up there with scarecrows for garden decorations. One of my favorites ever was this guy right here.

He reminds me of me when I’m having a bad hair day!
Here are some more cute flower pot people, and animals, I think they make a great scarecrow alternative in the garden.
Uncle Sam wants you… to garden.

Most would be adorable seated on a bench in the middle of your garden, looking out over the vegetables and the flowers.
You can have flower pot people who root for your favorite sports team.

Veggie People!

Veggie People!

Our local county fair has a contest where you can create a veggie person. This year they had some adorable entries. I really  need to enter this myself next year. Of course I say that every year, and by the time fair rolls around the next year I forget all about it.
Here are some of my favorite veggie people from this year’s county fair.
Who knew cabbage, tomatoes and carrots could make such a cute person?

Frosty had a corn cob pipe, this veggie person has a popcorn nose.

Don’t discriminate against the squash! They make pretty cute veggie people …read more

Gardening Is Fun!

Gardening Is Fun!

I asked my son the other day what I should write about gardening. He said, “It’s fun!” Sometimes in the heat of summer when we’re worried about garden pests, or weeds taking over our precious plants we forget about the fun. Or at least I do.

The main reason I garden is because it relaxes me, and I enjoy it. When my husband or my son join me in the garden, it’s even more enjoyable and fun.
Sure it’s nice to put some fruits and vegetables in the freezer, save on the grocery bill, and have a bouquet of …read more

It’s Been A Cool Wet Summer

It’s Been A Cool Wet Summer

We’ve had a cool wet summer this year. The temperatures so far in July here in the Ohio Valley have been way below normal, with a couple days not even reaching 70`F.

It seems like it’s slowed my tomatoes way down. We’ve only had a few red tomatoes so far. I’m not really complaining too much. We usually have 90` and high humidity this time of year. It’s been kind of a nice break, if you’re partial to cooler weather.
The nights have been crisp and cool, and feel more like spring or fall. It’s been really nice to …read more

Summer Equinox Fairy Celebration

Summer Equinox Fairy Celebration

Today is the day my garden celebrates the Summer Equinox, the longest day of the year. The day the fairies dance around my garden and celebrate the start of summer.

I never can catch them in the act, but I’ll be watching for them this year! They can’t fool me. I’ll watch for their footprints and signs of celebration.

Have you caught the fairies in your garden celebrating the summer equinox? Don’t tell me fairies don’t exist!

They definitely exist in my garden, here’s the sign to prove it. Hah!

Cats and Rabbits

Cats and Rabbits

The cats were following me around this morning on my walk through all the gardens. I just wish they would do a little more to control the rabbit population.

There were no less than 5 rabbits hanging around my garden the other morning when I looked out. I keep trying to explain to the cats, if they don’t get rid of the rabbits, the rabbits are going to take over the world.

They just look at me and rub on my leg, I don’t think it’s sinking in.
So far the rabbits really haven’t messed with much in …read more

Finding Peace In The Garden

Finding Peace In The Garden

My garden is where I go to find peace, and my go to place when I just need to think. During the summer I enjoy walking around the yard, checking out the blooms, and what’s growing in the vegetable garden.

Visiting the garden is gives me an instant calm when I’m upset or nervous about something. There’s something about a beautiful flower, butterfly, bird, or green leafy plant that quiets the nerves.
That doesn’t mean the garden itself doesn’t sometimes cause me a little stress. The weather, garden pests, or Mother Nature herself can sometimes cause me a little stress when …read more

Daylight Savings Time Begins March 8th

Daylight Savings Time Begins March 8th

I just discovered this weekend that Daylight Savings Time begins March 8th. Woot! Living in the midwest I love it when the time changes and the days start getting longer during the spring and summer.
Before 2007 the dates the time changed were the  first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. But now Daylight Savings Time begins on the second Sunday in March and goes to the first Sunday in November. This adds over a month more of daylight savings, yay!
I know many of you don’t have that time change. For me it always seems …read more

If I Could Take Three Plants To A Desert Island…

If I Could Take Three Plants To A Desert Island…

If I was stranded on a desert island, and I could take just three plants with me from the thousands of plant species out there… what would they be? Hmmm.
That’s the question that Shirl’s Garden Watch is challenging everyone to answer. If you could choose just three plants to take with you to a desert island, with no restrictions on growing conditions. Any plant will grow, and food plants are already available. What plants would you choose?
The first plant I would pick would be a big one. I’d have to take a weeping willow tree, because they hold a special …read more

Do You Have Any Garden Related New Year’s Resolutions?

Do You Have Any Garden Related New Year’s Resolutions?

Most of us have set our new years resolutions to lose that extra weight, quit that bad habit, bla, bla, bla. What I’m interested in are any garden related new years resolutions you may have made.
Here are mine:

Less weeds in the garden, about July the weeds decide to go into overdrive, and I slack off in my efforts to keep them out of the garden.
I want to focus more on preserving the garden harvest this year. With the economy still uncertain I would like to save money by growing and preserving more of my own food this year. I …read more
