What a stinking hot day! My pansies were wilting by lunchtime, when the temperature was close to forty degrees celsius, and who can blame them. I felt almost like an angel of mercy giving them a drink this morning.

Imagine how the country will look by the end of summer. Frankly I can’t. It is already so grizzled, and we are only at the beginning of the journey that will take us, eventually, to rain and normality. If it can ever be normal again.
Even the native trees - big eucalypts that have surely survived […]

I was talking to a friend about this blog the other day, and she told me a fascinating story. She said that years ago, when she had been working at the Women’s Health Centre in northern rural New South Wales, she had regular contact with women from the nearby all female commune, which was called […]

People have been suggesting to me recently that I must know more about gardening than I pretend.
I don’t think this is true, but I suppose it is not the kind of thing on which a judgement can sensibly be made. When the amount to be known is infinite, we are all ignorant no matter […]

It’s hard to believe that a few days ago Melbourne was shrouded in smoke from the bushfires burning all round the city, and that it seemed as though it would never rain again. For weeks now our parks and gardens have been brown and dessicated. Even the eucalypt trees are showing signs of water stress […]

What do you know! I was looking through some old files and found this photo, about four years old, of me and the kids in our old garden in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. We were on our way to the local pageant, hence the fancy dress (we don’t usually look like this!!) […]

I met Mrs Ponda again yesterday morning, except now I know that her real name is Mrs Benn. She lives in a beautiful old brick house at the top of Flemington Hill, and her front garden is full of old roses. Some of them have been there more than 30 years. She has neatly staked […]
