Caring for the Christmas Poinsettia

by linette on December 9th, 2007

Poinsettia photo from stockxpert.comI love poinsettias. They’re one of my absolute favorite plants. I get at least one every year to display at Christmas time in memory of loved ones. Many will stay beautiful and keep their color for several months if properly cared for.

When you bring your poinsettia home cover it with a plastic or paper sleeve if the air outside is cold to keep the plant from freezing. Once you get your flower home place it in a sunny window. Poinsettias like temperatures ranging from 65-75` F. You should remove the decorative foil around the pot to let the roots breath. Water your poinsettia frequently, until thoroughly soaked, but don’t let the plant sit in water. Check your plant daily and water when the surface dirt is dry.

My problem is, even after the flowers are gone, I keep the plant. I still have last year’s poinsettia in my living room window. It’s all green since I have yet to get one to bloom again. There are several sites that will tell you how to make your poinsettia bloom again, but I’ve never had much luck

Here are a couple great links with more detail on getting your poinsettia plant through the holiday season and possibly getting it to bloom again next year.
