A planned garden: Who are you planting for?

by Rebecca on March 30th, 2007

tomatoThis is the determining factor for how your garden will look, and what you will be growing. Are you planting simply for your own enjoyment? If this is the case you can pretty much grow what ever you want in your garden, because its all for you! Or you might be planting for other people, for example if you want your flowers to be seen and enjoyed by passer by, or if you are planning on growing vegetables to give to people or potted plants. If this is the case, you will have to be more picky in your choices. If you are wanting everyone to enjoy the beauty of your garden, you might want to be a bit more showy. For example, my parents plant a flower bed around their front deck to spruce it up, but in order for it to be seen from the road or by people walking by they have to plant bright colors or large blooms. Other wise no one could really tell what they planted. If your not planting in an easily viewed place, add a path to your garden, so friends can walk through and get up close and personal to your garden. With a path you don’t have to be so showy, since people can see up close, and you have the privilege to plant a greater variety of plants. If you are planning on growing container plants, make sure the type of plant will work well in a potted or indoor environment . Is your vegetable garden intended for mass consumption? That’s easy, find out what your friends and family want. Everyone loves fresh vegetables. I don’t like squash, but some of my friends do, so I’m sure it will find its way into my garden. Some people might disagree with me, but I fell this is the most important aspect in planning your garden. If you can answer this, then all other questions related to your garden become much easier to answer. What to plant, where to plant, what type of garden? It all depends on who its for!
