Mother Earth’s Garden

A planned garden: Where to plant

by Rebecca on March 22nd, 2007

FarmlandThis is a little more tricky, but still not too hard to figure out. Most people have this step figured out first. You might be walking around your house, and think, “that spot looks really dull, it needs some flowers.” This is perfectly fine, you will just need to make sure the plants that you buy are good for that spot. There are three main things to consider when planting a garden. Soil, Light, and Water. If it is on the shady side of the house, or only in sun part of the day, then you’ll need to get partial to full shade plants. Some plants are really picky about their soil and water. Some like sandy soil, and are very forgiving when it comes to dry conditions . Others must stay moist almost all the time and need a rich fertile soil to thrive. Every plant is unique in its wants and needs, but a good rule of thumb when it comes to soil is to look for dark, moist, loose soil that has a lot of “stuff” in it. When I say stuff I mean you can dig a small hole in the ground and find little sticks, bits of leaves, and other organic material if you look at it in your hand. If you are one of the unlucky people to have dry powdery soil, you can fix this with a healthy dose of compost. You will probably need to do this on a regular basis. Most plants will specify on the label about how much water and sun it will need. All you have to do, is either look for plants that work for the area you are wanting to garden, or find an area that works for a plant you are wanting to grow.
