Mother Earth’s Garden

A planned garden: What type of garden?

by Rebecca on March 17th, 2007

This is the easiest question to answer! Are you growing vegetables? Planning on growing a flower bed to brighten your walkway? Or maybe you are growing an herb garden indoors in pots. There are many types of gardens; container garden, vegetable garden, flower garden, rock garden, water garden, and on and on and on! What do you want to grow, no specifics, just what’s your style? What type of plants are you wanting? Like I said, the easiest question to answer. I do a little bit of everything. Once you have decided what type of garden you are wanting, then you can start planning more specifics. You don’t necessarily have to know all about how to design and grow a rock garden, but if you know that’s what you want, then at least you have a place to start! Also you need to look at your climate and space. Some types of gardens may not work the best for your space or climate. For example, a cottage style flower garden may not work for your climate because of the type of flowers that are typically grown in this style of garden. But again, if that is what you want you can usually find plants that will work just fine in your zone. Also certain types of gardens take more work, or shall I say more strenuous work than others. If you have no idea about what type of garden you want to grow, or what type of garden would be best for your area, ask your local garden center, or check out some sources online. A really great source is Garden Web. You can connect with gardeners in your area or “zone” and find what works for them.
