9 Fun Uses For Gourds

by linette on September 19th, 2008

IMG_3777 Gourds are a staple for fall harvest displays, but gourds can also be used for many other things, they’re very versatile. I try to grow some of every size and shape in my garden every year.

Here are just some of the uses there are for gourds.

  1. You can paint them and add them to a display of painted pumpkins.
  2. You can dry them and use them to make Christmas ornaments.
  3. You can add them to a fall centerpiece for the dinner, or buffet table.
  4. You can scoop out the seeds and insides, and use them for colorful containers.
  5. Add them to your fall backyard display.
  6. They would add some color to a cornucopia.
  7. Hide them around the yard and add them to the list for a fall scavenger hunt.
  8. Make a birdhouse. The large bottleneck, or birdhouse gourds work the best for this. Let them dry in a warm dry place. When you can shake them and hear the seeds rattling, cut a round hole for the bird’s entrance in the front of the gourd. Drill a small hole in the bottom for drainage, and a couple small holes at the top to loop a wire or string through.
  9. Dry them, to save some seeds for next years crop.

What do you use your gourds for?
