I See Spring Growth!

I See Spring Growth!

The weather was fairly nice yesterday (Saturday) here in Ohio. I was out working in the yard and garden Friday and Saturday. We even saw some blue skies and sunshine for a few moments. The grass is looking greener, my daffodils are budding, the pussy willow is looking quite festive, and my rhubarb is peeking through the mulch. I get so excited this time of year (remind me in July, I like warm weather).
Check out my weekend pics.
Here’s the rhubarb poking out of the ground, I’m already planning the rhubarb-strawberry pie.

I couldn’t resist taking a shot of the pussy willow …read more

Dim The Lights For Earth Hour

Dim The Lights For Earth Hour

You can join millions of others turning off their lights for one hour, March 29th. Our power was out for 2 days after the ice storm earlier this month, we made it through that so one hour should be fun.
5 things to do while the lights are out
1. Talk about ideas you and your family can implement to help conserve energy.
2. Play a board game with your children by candle light.
3. Tell ghost stories (or garden stories).
4. Catch up on what’s going on with your children or spouse.
5. Go outside and look at the stars, your garden, or …read more

Daffodils – One Of Springs Natural Beauties

Daffodils – One Of Springs Natural Beauties

It’s spring flower time! Actually I guess it’s April shower time, and some of you know that better than others with the recent flooding. The showers should bring us some blooming spring flowers in the upcoming weeks.
One of my favorite spring flowers is daffodils. They are so easy to grow, and a great spring blooming flower for naturalizing in meadows, and ditches.
Daffodils love the sun, but I have some in the front of my house where they’re shaded for part of the day. Even with the partial shade I have brilliant blooms every spring.
Daffodils like lots …read more

Food Network Has You Eating Green

Food Network Has You Eating Green

I was browsing through The Food Network earlier tonight, and discovered they have a whole section devoted to eating green. They discuss the criteria for organic, sustainable, natural, and locally grown food. They also discuss hormone free, free range, grass fed, and antibiotic free, and the definitions for those terms. It’s a nifty little guide.
I was there browsing for some spring vegetable recipes, and they didn’t disappoint in that area either.
